Evalution of Perception
Perception
was based on 'time' and 'panic', this related to the works of Motionhouse's
'Perfect'. During watching Motionhouse's 'Perfect' we studied their moves and
applied some techniques to our dance. I feel that everyone in the group
contributed well and encouraged each other greatly.
During the
choreography of the piece I learnt a lot about contemporary dance style. For
example, the term retrograde is performing a phrase or movements backwards or
in reverse. This was shown in the piece where some of the others students did a
solo and then used retrograde afterwards so it felt like they were going back
in time. Also planes and levels, which were used frequently in our piece so
that the piece had a variety of heights so the piece was more expressive.
At the start
of the piece my parallel position was strong and clear which made the piece
look more professional and it looked like I knew what I was doing and was
confident. The first piece of dance I did in the piece was a solo that I
created, I felt that in I was confident with the solo and had good extension in
the moves. With the floor phrase I was confident with it and knew all the moves
with good technique and extension, this gave more expression to the panic that
I was portraying. With the movements to get across the stage, the slide I did
covered a lot of ground which I struggled with in previous runs, this was
confident and fluent as well. In the second solo the dynamics I felt were
strong which portrays panic and it was quite rushed which also shows a panic
feeling throughout the piece. When the three of us were doing the moves
sideways to the audience, my expression and extension in those moves was
confident and strong.
When
performing I was quite fidgety when I was standing after my solo and leah's
solo, this could be because I need to increase the length of my solo, so I
wasn’t standing around for too long. Also, my solo, I felt was a bit fast and
wasn’t strong enough so if I was to perform it again I would make sure all of
the movements in my solo was stronger. After I walked back from doing my solo,
I wasn’t in a good parallel position which could have put me off balance, so I
would need to make sure I was in a good parallel position every time I was still
unless I was told otherwise. Some of the dance at the front I felt was a bit
rushed and I was watching the other dancers when I should be looking out to the
audience. On the cartwheels I needed to cover more ground, this is an
improvement I would work on as most of my travelling movements were not
travelled enough. When we ran down our bodies with our heads then got up, for
some reason I started dragging my legs along the ground, I feel like at this
part of the piece I need to concentrate more. When running on to do my second
solo, I had what's known as 'dinosaur arms' and my run should have been
stronger, so it looked like I was panicking. Also, my second solo was also
rushed.
There were a
few challenges I faced when composing the performance, for example, during our
run throughs I was doing a front hand flip, however a few days before the show
I was told I couldn’t do the flip, so I had to change my travelling movement
which I couldn’t think of what to do until I came up with a slide. Once I had
composed my solo, I struggled remembering it, so for one lesson I just
constantly tried to remember both my solos, repeating them over and over.
When we were
stepping out all doing different actions we had to teach each other our own
actions we had made up so that the actions could be repeated. The team I was
with at this point listened to my ideas and we adapted them, so they would fit
with the piece. When doing Leah's solo, we had to work as part of a team so
that we could stay in time as some solos before finished earlier and some late
on so starting at the same time caused a problem but as a team we pushed
through.
During my
time doing this dance, at the start I was uncomfortable not doing street dance
as that was where my back-ground dance was and floor work plus tricks, I found
out that I could use some of these moves, adapt them and they were contemporary
dance techniques which helped me be more confident with flowing movements, not
just tricks and flips. Also during the start
I didn’t feel comfortable extending anything to its full potential, but
now I realise that it makes it look better.
